S Royle Road will be closed from Legacy Trails apartments to S 15th Street/Wells Drive Monday, June 17 to Wednesday, July 3. Use detour route (PDF). The roundabout at S Royle Road and S 15th Street/Wells Drive will remain open. This closure is necessary to complete roadway excavation, cement amend soil, place base rock, pour curbs and begin to top with asphalt for Phase 2 of Royle Road Corridor Improvements. By allowing the contractor to have full access to the site via a complete road closure, the project will be completed quicker, resulting in reduced cost for the City and ensuring that the project is completed prior to disruptions from the upcoming Pioneer Street Widening project.
- Detour: A detour will be in place on Pioneer Street to S 56th Place, S 6th Way, Timm Road, and S 11th Street/Wells Drive. Detour Route (PDF).
- Access to the Cloverhill neighborhood will be provided at the intersection of S 15th Street/S 43rd Ave.
- The roadway will be open on weekends, but the driving surface will be rock. Please use caution.

- During this phase you'll see:
- Completion of roundabout at S. Wells Dr/ S. 15th St
- Center median/ turn lane
- Bike lanes and sidewalks
- Street light installation
We will start to see major progress over the next few months, and with that will come occasional lane closures to stay on track with the estimated completion date of April 22, 2023 for Phase 1.
Our Road Construction and Traffic Impact page found here, will be updated regularly with any significant impacts that may affect the community.
Next Steps
Phase 2 (Summer 2023): Northern Section of Royle Road, between north of South 15th Street and south of South 3rd Way.
- Phase 2 of the project will involve the completion of utility relocations and consolidation into a “joint utility trench” prior to beginning road work. The City is working with the design team to stage the road and sidewalk work in three phases, so as to minimize the need for long-term road closures to do the work. Short-term closures may be needed to tie in the various phases and shift work zones. This phase is nearing design and permitting completion as well as right-of-way acquisition. The project is anticipated to be going to bid this spring with construction starting in the summer of 2023. Completion of Phase 2 is expected late in 2024.
Phase 3 (Timeline TBD): Southern Section of Royle Road, between Hillhurst Road and South 19th Street.
- Phase 3 of the the Royle Road improvements will be on the southern section of the road. Phase 3 will allow to replace a narrow culvert over Gee Creek, which impedes the water flow and fish passage along the creek, with a much improved culvert that includes a widened roadway corridor as well as removing impediments to stream flow and fish passage. The southern section of the Royle Road improvements are in the initial planning stages, with the City seeking grant funding to assist with the cost of the culvert replacement. Funding options are to be finalized by 2024.
